The SoloRider vehicle was specifically
designed to comply with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act
of 1990. The ADA requires that public facilities provide reasonable
accommodations to individuals with disabilities. The US Supreme Court ruled in
PGA Tour v. Martin that providing a cart for the disabled individual "was both a
reasonable and a necessary solution" to providing access to golf facilities. US
regulators have stated that compliance vehicles need to have (at a minimum) hand
controls, swivel seat, transfer bars, and assistive device holders in order to
accommodate the needs of individuals with mobility impairments.
In addition to these government defined
elements, the vehicle provides unparalleled stability, exceeding the ANSI
stability requirements for golf cars. This level of stability far exceeds that
found in scooter type vehicles, and is the result of the commitment that the car
would be stable anywhere the golfer would need it to go. The car also provides a
top speed of 14 mph, similar to a standard golf car, and has regenerative
braking and speed control standard. This ensures control and prevents runaways
even on steep hills, and provides for longer battery life.
The car has a patented swivel seat
mechanism that allows the user to position the seat infinitely in any
orientation to ensure the ability to address the ball as it lies. The hand
controls provided on the car are similar in layout to those found on a scooter,
snowmobile or motorcycle, so becoming familiar with the controls is easy and
fast. The car is designed in such a way that the golfer’s handicap will only be
related to his/her ability to play the game, not any mobility impairment they
may have.
In addition to use for playing golf, the
multi-functional vehicle can be used for third or fifth players, as a ranger
vehicle, utility vehicle, or to access other outdoor venues like parks or
recreational areas.
